On March 27, 2026, an exhibition titled “March 27 – International Theatre Day” was presented to users at the National Library.

The exhibition features publications in Azerbaijani and foreign languages on topics such as the world theatre system, the history of world theatre, theatre culture, the history and development of theatre in Azerbaijan, works of Azerbaijani and world playwrights, the art of acting, theatre theory and criticism.

March 27 is celebrated worldwide as International Theatre Day. This significant day was established in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute to support the development of theatre arts, highlight its role in society, and strengthen cultural relations among different peoples.

Theatre is one of the oldest forms of art, expressing human emotions, thoughts, and life realities through stage performance. It helps audiences reflect, become acquainted with different destinies, and understand various aspects of life. At the same time, theatre highlights social issues and encourages people to become more sensitive and understanding.

Azerbaijan has a rich theatre tradition. The foundation of national theatre was laid on March 10, 1873, with the performance of Mirza Fatali Akhundzadeh’s comedy “The Adventure of the Lankaran Khanate’s Vizier” by an amateur theatre troupe from Baku Real School. Figures such as Hasan bey Zardabi and Najaf bey Vazirov played an important role in this process, and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev made significant contributions to its development.

Today, theatre in Azerbaijan continues to develop actively, with many professional theatres operating in the country. Azerbaijani theatres remain an integral part of national culture, playing an important role in preserving, developing, and transmitting cultural heritage to future generations.
