June 22 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Azerbaijani opera singer, skilled classical performer, researcher of musical folklore, founder of Azerbaijani professional vocal art, people's artist Murtuza Mammadov (Bulbul).

Bulbul was a great personality with a wide range of activity in a whole stage of the history of the development of professional musical art.

He has gone through a wide creative path from a folk singer to an opera singer, vocal art teacher and scientist, and is an irreplaceable phenomenon in the world vocal art experience. He was the first vocalist who moved from a specific Eastern school to a European vocal school, he created a new singing school in Azerbaijan by combining the best methods of the Azerbaijani national mugham singing art with the Russian and European vocal school, and effectively influenced the singing art of the peoples of Transcaucasia, Central Asia, the Near and Middle East.

Bulbul is the first Azerbaijani professor who rose to the top of the music teaching and research process in the vocal field. Azerbaijani vocal art is indebted to Bulbul's creative legacy in entering the world of great realism, developing and improving on the basis of the achievements of Russian and European vocal art and enriching it in terms of content in accordance with the spirit of the time.

For the first time in Azerbaijan, he organized a scientific-research cabinet for the collection and study of folklore samples, and attracted experienced folk art connoisseurs, young and talented composers and musicians to study the heritage of classical folk melodies and ensure constant communication with him.

As a result of this many Azerbaijani mughams found its bright expression in operas, ballets, symphonic, chamber, instrumental and vocal works, songs and romances by G. Garayev, F. Amirov, Niyazi, R. Hajibeyov, S. Hajibeyov, S. Rustamov, J. Jahangirov, J. Hajiyev, T. Guliyev and many others, among the luminaries of Azerbaijani and world music art.

A number of significant scientific works on the study of Azerbaijani folklore belong to Bulbul, he is the editor and compiler of the first world classics and collections of Azerbaijani folk songs published in Azerbaijan.

On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the founder of the professional vocal art of Azerbaijan, People's Artist Murtuza Mammadov (Bulbul), the staff of the National Library presented "Prominent personalities of Shusha. A virtual exhibition named "Bulbul" has been prepared. Official documents, photos, books and articles written about People's Artist Bulbul are displayed in the virtual exhibition.
