A scientific seminar titled “The Role of Libraries in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage Samples” was held at Baku State University within the Faculty of Information and Document Management, as part of a series of events dedicated to March 27 – “Science Day” in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

At the seminar, Deputy Director of the Azerbaijan National Library, PhD in History Adiba Ismayilova delivered a presentation on the topic “The Role of Libraries in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage Samples.”

Based on the experience of the Azerbaijan National Library, the report highlighted the role of libraries in modern information society. It was noted that libraries are not only institutions providing information services, but also scientific and cultural centers that play a key role in preserving, systematizing, and transmitting national cultural heritage to future generations.

The presentation emphasized that rare manuscripts, printed publications, historical documents, and other information resources preserved in library collections are of great importance as part of cultural heritage. Their preservation, protection, and integration into scientific circulation are among the main directions of library activity.

Detailed information was provided about rare manuscript copies, rare printed books published in various countries, and historical documents reflecting different periods of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage preserved in the National Library’s collection. It was noted that the National Library houses early examples of Azerbaijani book culture, including handwritten manuscripts, early lithographic books, and periodicals published from the 19th century to the present day. The “Rare Books and Library Museum” department preserves ancient books in nearly 20 languages, fundamental research works in various fields of science, and valuable reference literature.

The report also highlighted digitization projects implemented at the Azerbaijan National Library, the creation of electronic information resources, the formation of national bibliographic databases, and work in the field of international information exchange. It was emphasized that the application of modern technologies creates new opportunities for preserving cultural heritage items in library collections and ensuring their accessibility to a wider audience.
