The liberation of Lachin was made possible through the military operations of the Azerbaijani Army during the Patriotic War under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan.
On August 26, 2022, the national flag of Azerbaijan was raised in Lachin city, marking the deployment of Azerbaijani forces there. The date was subsequently designated as Lachin City Day by the Presidential Decree of July 31, 2023, “On the Establishment of City Days in the Liberated Territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan”.
Lachin City Day commemorates the restoration of Azerbaijan's control over the city and symbolizes national unity, statehood, and the restoration of territorial integrity. The return of Lachin holds strategic and historical significance in Azerbaijan's national memory.
Extensive reconstruction and development projects are being implemented in Lachin district under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. Improvements to road and transport infrastructure, energy facilities, social services, and the development of an international airport are contributing to the region's economic and social development.
As part of the “Great Return” programme, residents are gradually returning to their ancestral lands. The ongoing restoration of Lachin represents an important component of Azerbaijan's long-term development strategy and efforts to revitalize the liberated territories.
