Virtual Exhibition – International Day for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Since 1992, May 5 has been observed worldwide as the International Day for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The main purpose of this day is to draw attention to the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, ensure their participation in society as equal members, and highlight the challenges they face.

In Azerbaijan, more than 600,000 people (approximately 6–6.5% of the population) live with various types of disabilities. Legal frameworks and state programs have been established to protect their rights, and the country has joined the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. According to these laws, persons with disabilities have equal rights in the fields of education, employment, healthcare, and social protection.

In Azerbaijan, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation plays an important role in protecting the rights and improving the social welfare of persons with disabilities. The Foundation’s activities are mainly focused on social projects, humanitarian initiatives, and the promotion of inclusion. The Foundation’s president, Mehriban Aliyeva, pays special attention to this field and leads the implementation of various projects.

Alongside the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, a number of other governmental and non-governmental organizations also operate in Azerbaijan in the field of protecting the rights and social welfare of persons with disabilities.
