March 8 is a day of international solidarity of women in the struggle for economic, social, and political equality. The celebration of International Women’s Day was proposed by Clara Zetkin at the Second International Conference of Socialist Women held in Copenhagen in 1910. It was first celebrated in 1911 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Denmark, and has been marked in Azerbaijan since 1917.

At the initiative of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the State Committee for Women’s Issues was established on January 14, 1998. In the same year, on September 14, the First Congress of Azerbaijani Women was held, giving a strong impetus to increasing the role of women in the socio-political life of independent Azerbaijan.

On March 6, 2000, a decree “On the implementation of state women’s policy in the Republic of Azerbaijan” was signed, emphasizing gender equality and the adequate representation of women in public administration.

Today, women’s policy is successfully implemented in Azerbaijan as an integral part of state policy. As a result of the purposeful efforts of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, a comprehensive gender-oriented state policy has been established, ensuring the continuous progress of Azerbaijani women and strengthening their достойное place in the international community.
