On April 23, an event dedicated to World Book and Copyright Day was held at the National Library.

The event was opened by the Director of the National Library, Professor Karim Tahirov, who welcomed the participants and noted that the decision to establish World Book and Copyright Day was adopted in 1995 at UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris. Since 1996, this significant day has been celebrated worldwide, and since 1997 in Azerbaijan.

The Director emphasized that special attention is paid in the country to the development of intellectual property and the improvement of legislation in this field. He also highlighted that copyright, related rights, and other intellectual property rights are enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

He further noted that the main purpose of celebrating World Book and Copyright Day is to emphasize the role of books as a bridge between the past and the future, between generations and cultures. He stressed that reading plays a vital role in shaping a person’s character, enriching spiritual life, and developing thinking and cognitive abilities.

In her speech, Təranə Əliyeva, an employee of the Institute of Law and Human Rights, stated that the key message of the day is not only to love books but also to protect them, respect authors’ work, and pass reading culture on to future generations. She also presented publications of the Institute to the participants and expressed her gratitude to the leadership of the National Library for organizing the event.

During the event, both a traditional and virtual exhibition titled “April 23 – World Book and Copyright Day” prepared by the staff of the National Library was presented to participants.

At the end, publications of the Institute of Law and Human Rights were gifted to attendees.
