A Book Exhibition Titled “Writer-Poet Ilgar Fahmi” Opened at the National Library

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the birth of poet, writer, screenwriter, and Secretary for Creative Affairs of the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union, Ilgar Fahmi, a book exhibition titled “Writer-Poet Ilgar Fahmi” has been launched at the National Library.

The exhibition showcases a wide range of Ilgar Fahmi’s creative works, including his short stories, novellas, novels, poems, screenplays, publicistic writings, teleplays, collections of scripts, translations, as well as books where he served as preface author, consultant, or editor. Also presented are literary studies about his work and articles published in the periodical press.

Ilgar Fahmi (Pashayev Ilgar Aliabas oglu) was born on August 18, 1975, in the village of Zira, Baku, into an intellectual family. He studied law at Baku State University from 1992 to 1996 and later graduated from the Belarus State Economic University.

Since 1995, he has been engaged in literary activity. For many years, he participated in traditional poetic gatherings in Baku and Absheron. He is the author of eighteen books covering a broad range of literary genres, and his works have been published in several foreign countries.

Ilgar Fahmi is especially known for works such as "Aphorisms or Notes of an Unfortunate Man", "The Secret", "The Poetics of Baku City", and the novel "A Collage from Baku’s History", along with numerous stories, essays, and translations.

In modern Azerbaijani literature, Ilgar Fahmi is a promoter of intellectual literature, new thought, and creative imagination. His artistic vision emphasizes innovation, bold perspectives, and the importance of modern human values and literary exploration.

His works offer readers a new literary outlook, deep psychological insight, original artistic language, and unique character types. While preserving Azerbaijani literary traditions, Ilgar Fahmi also introduces a synthesis of Eastern and Western literary elements and brings the evolving artistic mindset of a globalized world into Azerbaijani literature. He is also widely known for his high-quality literary translations of Azerbaijani and world classics.

Ilgar Fahmi worked for many years at Ulduz literary magazine under the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union. He has also taught Creative Writing at Khazar University. Currently, he works at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts, in the Department of Film Studies and Screenwriting, where he teaches TV Series Scriptwriting. He also serves as the Secretary for Creative Affairs at the Azerbaijan Writers’ Union.

Since 2014, he has been the host and editor of the literary TV program Məclisi-Üns on Azerbaijan State Television. In 2017, with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, he became a jury member of the televised Mugham music competition, and in 2019, he was appointed Executive Director of the project.

Ilgar Fahmi is recognized as an active public figure in the Azerbaijani literary and cultural sphere. Among his awards are:

  • Best Young Poet of the Year (2003)

  • Rasul Rza Literary Award (2007)

  • Diploma of the Poetry Contest among Young Poets of CIS Countries (Russia, 2008)

  • Humay Award for "A Collage from Baku’s History” (2011)

  • “880th Anniversary of Nizami Ganjavi” Commemorative Badge by the Ministry of Culture (2021)

  • “100th Anniversary of Heydar Aliyev” Jubilee Medal (2024)
