A book exhibition titled “Honored Art Worker Gambar Huseynli – 110” has been presented to users at the National Library.

On April 16, 2026, the National Library presented to users a book exhibition titled “Honored Art Worker Gambar Huseynli – 110,” dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the birth of Gambar Huseynli, one of the prominent representatives of the Azerbaijani school of composition who made exceptional contributions to the development of the national musical heritage.

The exhibition features musical works of Gambar Huseynli preserved in the National Library’s collection, literature about his life, studies on his role in the history of Azerbaijani musical culture, analyses of the musical language and stylistic features of his works, as well as materials published in periodicals.

Gambar Mukhtar oglu Huseynli was born on April 16, 1916, in the city of Ganja. From a young age, he showed deep interest in folk music, learned the fundamentals of classical mugham, and this knowledge later played an important role in his compositional activity. He received his first musical education at the Ganja Secondary Specialized Music School, where he studied tar and graduated with honors. At the same time, in 1929–1934, he studied at the Ganja Pedagogical Technical School. Later, he continued his education at the Baku Music Technical School, studying cello (under A.S. Shvarts) and composition (under G.Z. Burshteyn).

In 1951–1954, Gambar Huseynli received his second higher musical education in composition at the Baku Music Technical School named after A. Zeynalli (under B. Zeidman).

His creative work is multifaceted. He composed music for dramatic works staged at the Ganja State Drama Theatre, including “Sheikh Sanan,” “Katar Mammad,” “Almaz,” “Unfortunate Young Man,” “Faded Flowers,” “Honor,” and others.

He transcribed 55 traditional ashig melodies performed by ashig Teymur Huseynov and adapted them for ensemble performance. The composer’s creative legacy is also rich in folk and children’s songs. He is the author of more than 300 songs and romances, as well as dozens of children’s songs. In particular, the song “Chicks” gained worldwide fame and has been performed in more than 100 languages. His songs such as “First Love,” “In the Moonlight,” “Dancing Braids,” “By the Spring,” “I Remember You,” “Long Nights,” and “I Circle Around You” are still loved and performed today.

His activity as both a professional musician and educator, as well as his effective contributions to the formation of modern musical culture, have been highly valued.

In 1961, Gambar Huseynli was awarded the honorary title “Honored Art Worker” and the Order of the Badge of Honor. By the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated November 25, 2015, the 100th anniversary of his birth was officially celebrated at the state level, and in January 2018, a monument to him was erected in his native city of Ganja.
