September 18 is National Music Day in Azerbaijan. This date is related to the birthday of Uzeyir Hajibeyov, the author of the first opera in the East, the founder of the professional music art of Azerbaijan, the great musicologist-scientist Uzeyir Hajibeyov. Taking into account the unparalleled services of Uzeyir Hajibeyov in the development of Azerbaijani musical art, on September 18, 1995, National leader Heydar Aliyev signed a decree on celebrating September 18 as the National Music Day on the eve of the 110th anniversary of the birth of the great composer. According to the decree, from that date, Uzeyir Hajibeyov's birthday was celebrated nationwide as the National Music Day.
Uzeyir Hajibeyov is remembered as the creator of the first opera, the first musical comedy and the first samples in a number of other genres in the history of Azerbaijani music, in addition to laying the foundations of new ways of development and the national composition school in the history of Azerbaijani musical culture. The musical pearls created by the genius composer have gained world fame and entered the golden fund of world music culture.
