People's writer of Azerbaijan Gilman Ilkin was born on April 28, 1914 in Mardakan village of Baku.

Gılman Ilkin started his literary work in 1943 with the story "Yaraly şahin". His short story "On the Paths of Life" dedicated to Najaf Bey Vazirov's childhood was published in 1947.

" Qalada üsyan  - (Revolt in the Castle)", " Dəniz qapısı  - (Gate of Sea)", "Madam Qadri" novels, " Həyat yollarında  - (On the Roads of Life)", " Ömrümün cavan çağları  - (Young Ages of My Life)", "Uchtepa Ushaqlari", " Dəniz həmişə göy olur  - (The Sea is Always Blue)", " Şimal küləyi  - (North Wind)" and other stories, " Cərrahlar  - (Surgeons)", " Tayqa nağılı  - (Taiga tale)", " Əsgər müharibədən qayıdırdı  - (The soldier was returning from the war)", " Geriyə yol yoxdur  - (There is no way back)", " Çətin döngələr – (Hard turns)", " Baba və nəvə  - (Grandfather and grandson)", " Həyat sınaqları  - (Life challenges)", "Qarishqa shillag atdi" is the author of plays and a series of stories. His "Baku and "Baku people" book is a valuable resource containing rich materials on the history of not only Baku, but also the surrounding villages.

In 1994-2000, the books "Do you know Baku?" and "Peacock feather" were published in mass circulation.

The writer duly represented our prose with his works that were translated into the languages ​​of a number of nations and spread beyond the borders of our country. At the same time, thanks to his translations, the Azerbaijani reader had the opportunity to get acquainted with some examples of world literary thought.

Gilman Ilkin was also recognized as the scriptwriter of several feature films and television shows that entered the cinema annals of Azerbaijan. Most of the works of the people's writer were shown on television for a long time, and the play "New student" was staged. The film "Invincible Battalion" was made in "Azerbaijanfilm" based on his novel "Uprising in the Castle". The writer is also the screenwriter of the film "Shadows Creep" and several documentaries and television plays.

Effective services of Gilman Ilkin in the development of modern Azerbaijani literature and press were evaluated. He was awarded many prizes and awards, including the honorary titles of "People's Writer" and "Honored Art Worker" of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Today is the 110th anniversary of the birth of Gilman Ilkin. On this occasion, a large book exhibition called "People's writer Gılman Ilkin" was opened in the National Library about the writer's life, activities and creativity.

In the exhibition, the writer's works, translations from world literature, books compiled, foreword, consultant and edited by him, literature written about his life and creativity are displayed in Azerbaijani and Russian languages.
