On March 18, an event titled “A Prominent Figure of 20th-Century Azerbaijani Literature – Samad Vurgun” was held in accordance with the Order on the celebration of the 120th anniversary of People’s Poet Samad Vurgun, jointly organized by the Ministry of Culture and the National Library.
The Director of the Azerbaijan National Library, Professor Karim Tahirov, spoke about Samad Vurgun’s creative legacy, noting that the works of the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev always placed special emphasis on the poet’s heritage, and that he once recited lines from Vurgun’s poem “Azerbaijan” from a high tribune with great emotion.
The Professor stated that Samad Vurgun’s language is considered one of the brightest, simplest, and most folk-oriented examples of the Azerbaijani literary language. His poetry is characterized by national spirit, folklore traditions, and rich artistic expression, with a language that is both sharp “like a sword” and remarkably fluent and full of aphorisms.
During the event, the National Library presented an electronic information database titled “Azerbaijan’s People’s Poet Samad Vurgun” and a virtual exhibition titled “Samad Vurgun – The First People’s Poet of Our Nation,” prepared by the library staff.
Mehman Hasanli, Executive Director of the Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Literature of ANAS, noted that Samad Vurgun became a symbol of the people during his lifetime due to his creativity, personality, patriotism, national spirit, international outlook, and numerous human qualities.
Aslan Salmansoy, PhD in Philology and researcher at the Institute of Literature, stated that Vurgun’s work represents one of the brightest and most unique pages in 20th-century Azerbaijani literature. His literary heritage played a major role in enriching the modern Azerbaijani language and literature, marking a new stage in the development of national culture. He also highlighted Vurgun’s contributions as one of the first academicians of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences and as a prominent public figure.
Director of the Samad Vurgun House-Museum, Vurgun Vekilov, highly appreciated the electronic database and virtual exhibition prepared by the National Library and expressed his deep gratitude to its leadership and staff.
At the end, participants familiarized themselves with the traditional exhibition.
