This commemorative day, established in 1983 by UNESCO upon the initiative of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), aims to highlight the importance of preserving historical and cultural heritage and to promote activities related to the restoration and transmission of monuments to future generations. On this occasion, extensive measures are carried out in almost all countries of the world for the protection, restoration, and tourism use of historical monuments.
In Azerbaijan, the protection of historical monuments is one of the priority directions of state policy. This field is regulated by the State Service for the Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage. The inventory and registration of tangible cultural heritage sites across the country are conducted, and projects for the restoration and conservation of monuments are prepared and implemented.
A strong legal framework has been established in the country for the protection of historical monuments. The declaration of 2026 as the “Year of Urban Planning and Architecture” is an important strategic step aimed at protecting cultural heritage, restoring monuments, defining protection zones, and ensuring the harmonious development of modern cities with their historical identity.
Through state programs, financial support is provided for the restoration of monuments, and new projects are being implemented in this field. Azerbaijan is one of the countries with a rich historical and cultural heritage. Ancient cities, castles, temples, and architectural monuments located in the country are our national treasure. The protection of historical monuments is not only a duty of the state but also a moral responsibility of every citizen.
