April 23 is International Book and Copyright Day. The decision was made in 1995 at the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris. Since 1996, this significant day has been celebrated all over the world as a sign of respect for books and authors.

The decision to announce the International Book and Copyright Day emphasizes that books and education are the greatest means and the most reliable method for the development and understanding of cultural traditions, as well as the dissemination and preservation of knowledge, and the special role of authors in society is noted.

International Book and Copyright Day has been celebrated in Azerbaijan since 1997.

It should be noted that the state pays special attention to the development of the field of intellectual property and the improvement of legislation in this field. Copyright, related rights and other intellectual property rights have been established for the first time in the Constitution, which is the main law of the country. In addition, the legal framework of this field has been formed in our country, the laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On copyright and related rights", "On library work", "On publishing work" have been signed, and the Intellectual Property Agency has been established. Also, by joining UNESCO's "World Convention on Copyright" (1997), it was involved in extensive international cooperation.

The purpose of celebrating the International Book and Copyright Day is to once again bring to the attention of the public the wide scope of books - the past and the future, the bridge between generations and cultures. The role of books and reading is of great importance in the formation of a person as a perfect personality, in the enrichment of his spiritual world, in the development of his artistic imagination, figurative and logical thinking, cognitive skills, and even in many cases in determining his life path and in citizenship education. Books are also the best way to make our language fall in love.

Ceremonial celebration of "International Book and Copyright Day" has already become a tradition in our country. On this occasion, a virtual and traditional book exhibition called "April 23 - International Book and Copyright Day" was prepared in the National Library.
