The virtual exhibition "Academician Akif Hajiyev" was presented to users online in the National Library

10-12-2022

This year marks the 85th anniversary of outstanding mathematician, academician Akif Hajiyev, who had important services in the development of Azerbaijani science.

Akif Hajiyev studied at Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University) in 1955-1960. He started his career as a junior researcher in the function theory department of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. In 1961-1967 he was the scientific secretary, in 1967-1978 he was a senior researcher, in 1978-1992 he was the head of the department of theory of real variable functions.

From 2004 to 2013, he worked as the director of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and from 2013 he was the vice-president of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

A. Hajiyev established the theory of convergence of univariate and multivariate functions in spaces weighted by sequences of linear positive operators in unbounded domains, gave the concept of linear k-positive operator in the spaces of analytic functions and showed the important role of these operators in the approximation of analytic functions in various domains. He created the theory of smoothness of symbols of multidimensional singular integrals, studied its application in the theory of Fourier multipliers, proved Bernstein-type inequalities through indicator diagrams of multivariable integral functions. He studied the approximate properties of Riess and Bessel potentials at critical points, which are considered important operators of harmonic analysis. He proved two-weighted inequalities for them.

Academician is the author of more than 100 scientific works and 4 monographs. Under his leadership, 27 doctors of philosophy and 1 doctor of science were prepared in mathematics. He was awarded the "For Valiant Labor" medal, the "Labor veteran" medal, and the "Shohrat" order. In 2005, he was awarded the title of Honored Scientist, and in 2006, he was named Ambassador for Peace by the Universal Peace Federation and Interrelations and the International Federation for World Peace.

On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the outstanding academician, a virtual exhibition called "Academician Akif Hajiyev" was prepared by the staff of the National Library of Azerbaijan. Scientific works of the academician, books and articles written about him are displayed in the virtual exhibition.
